Amber Jewelry

Though it is, in fact, fossilized tree resin and not a stone at all, amber is still very much a gem. Demand for amber has increased substantially over the last twenty years, though its popularity is certainly nothing new. Archaeologists have found amber artifacts in what is now Denmark and Germany that date all the way back to the stone age. It is suspected that these early lovers of amber used it in their religious ceremonies.

Symbolism, Legend, and Healing Properties: The origin of amber is the subject of many myths. Ovid wrote that Phaethon, the excessively proud son of Helios, flew his father’s chariot too close to the earth, and burning parts of earth’s surface. To save the earth from being scorched, Zeus struck Phaethon with a thunderbolt and killed him. Phaethon’s sisters, the Heliades, were so aggrieved that they morphed into trees that wept golden amber. Amber’s healing properties are the enhancement of strength and calm.
