Amethyst Jewelry

Amethyst is a variety of quartz that gets its purple hue from a mix of iron and aluminum. It ranges in color from reddish purple to violet, and depending on the cut and grade, may have white bands. Amethyst takes its name from the Greek amethustos, or “not to intoxicate,” because both the Romans and Greeks believed that serving wine in an amethyst cup would prevent intoxication.

Symbolism, Legend, and Healing Properties: Historically, amethyst has been said to have far reaching protective powers such as the preservation of crop health, defense against locusts, protection against snake and insect bite, and relief from stomach ailments. Catholic clergy wore the stone as a symbol of chastity, trust, and piety.

Amethyst is a February birthstone.
