Onyx Jewelry
Onyx is another stone that has been used in jewelry and sculpture for many years. While most people associate onyx with the color black, the stone actually comes in a range hues. Red and white onyx are usually referred to as sardonyx, thought the chemical composition is the same as tat of the black variety. Like many stones, onyx is said to have gotten it's name from a Greek myth wherein Aphrodite's cut fingernails were thought so precious by the gods that they should be turned into stone, thereby giving them an eternal presence. Black fingernails? Probably not. Most onyx used in ancient Greece was of the white to brown variety.
