Peridot is iron magnesium silicate, and it is the iron that gives peridot its lovely green color. Interestingly, unlike most other gemstones, Peridot comes in only a single color. It is a fairly ubiquitous stone, though gem-quality Peridot, particularly in large karat weights, is rare. It is estimated that Peridot has been mined as a gemstone for over 4,000 years.
Symbolism, Legend, and Healing Properties: Peridot is associated with good fortune and sexual appeal. According to legend, peridot was the favorite gemstone of Cleopatra.
Peridot is an August birthstone.
