Most people refer to smoky quartz as smoky topaz. In fact, there is no such thing as smoky topaz and it’s actually illegal to sell this quartz gemstone as “topaz.” Many sellers don’t realize this, though some do, and get away with selling quartz at topaz prices.
Smoky quartz gets its brownish-gray to brownish-black hue from aluminum, though the color can be produced artificially by the irradiation of clear quartz.
